Montreux is probably best known for the annual Montreux Jazz Festival. But the little town in the French-speaking part of Switzerland blossoms in all its beauty, especially on a warmer day.
A place like paradise. With a fairytale-like womb of Chillon and what Deep Purple has to do with it all.
We Will Rock You
Life in Montreux during warmer days takes place mainly on the Lakeside Promenade Fleuri. This is not without reason, as paradise on earth can also be found here.
Big words. I know.
Immediately at Lake Geneva, the view of the promenade brings a broad grin to the face of every visitor. During my first visit, I was not astonished during the whole stay how beautiful everything is.
Several times I wanted to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming.
I landed alive in paradise!
Once you arrive in the centre, you will find the Freddie Mercury Monument next to numerous cafés and restaurants. This monument was erected in honour of the Queen singer, because the good guy recorded his last album “Made in Heaven” with the band.
Garden of Eden aka Lakeside promenade
Now you must make up your mind. First you go to the right to the city beach, or immediately left to the most famous sight of Montreux. Chillon Castle, or as it is called in French, Château de Chillon.
This is already located in Veytaux. But these are details.
My personal recommendation is to leave the highlight for the crowning finish and go for a walk in the other direction.
At the city beach on the right side of the lake promenade, you can barbecue, play, bathe and laugh together in full zest for life.
The numerous flowers along the promenade already accompany you on your way and will leave you in awe for a long time.
Montreux is heaven on earth.
You get this feeling, at least visually, as you walk along the promenade and sink into daydreams.
The beauty of Chillon Castle
180° in the other direction it goes in the direction to the castle, which is probably printed on every postcard (are there any left?) from Montreux.
The castle Chillon aka Château de Chillon alone is worth the visit of Montreux.
During a walk of about one hour full of philosophy of life and daydreams, you also enjoy wonderful views on the Lakeside Promenade.
The best thing about it is the combination of the beautiful flowered promenade with Lake Geneva and the Alps in the background.
Some of these are located in Switzerland. Partly already in France.
Arrived at the castle it becomes a bit touristic. If you like, you can have a look at the castle from the inside for an overpriced price, or stay in the souvenir shop.
You should use the time more sensibly and walk down to the wooden walkway where you can enjoy a breathtaking view.
Smoke On The Water
Montreux and music are one.
Besides the Montreux Jazz Festival and the many celebrities like Queen or Rolling Stones, who recorded in the studios of this city, Deep Purple also stayed here once.
When they recorded their album at the Grand Hotel in Montreux in the early 70s, fire broke out in the concert hall during a concert. The smoke spread over Lake Geneva, which the band members could watch from their studio.
Inspired by this event, Deep Purple wrote the song for their biggest hit Smoke On The Water.
A song that has survived many generations since its creation and is still a hit today.
